Her 24 Solar Terms

Her 24 Solar Terms depicts a woman’s whole life, and by extension, the entirety of a human life. Drawing on the concept of the Twenty-Four Solar Terms rooted in traditional Chinese culture, this body of work links ordinary fruits and vegetables from daily life to the female body. Each solar term stands for four years of life. Through an unpretentious perspective, as well as imagery, materials and artistic language that evoke synesthetic sensations, the artist constructs a microscopic portrait of life stretching for nearly a hundred years.

 

Far from merely reflecting one individual’s experience, Her 24 Solar Terms is an ode to women as a collective group. Women are both witnesses of history, and the source of new knowledge, agency and creation. In this series, I seek to express my attention to authentic life experience — neither framed in abstraction nor embellished with deliberate idealization. Taking the female body as an entry point, the work meditates on women’s inner vitality and emotional strength, as well as the true meaning of time and existence.
